September 2008 UPCOMING EVENTS 9/1 Labor Day - Office Closed 9/3 Cooperative Ministry Meeting 9/7 Rally Day & Luncheon for Bishop Eaton 9/10 Choir Practice Begins 9/14 Pastor Bowen’s Ordination Anniversary 9/28 Church Picnic
Effective 9/7/08 FALL WORSHIP SCHEDULE 9:30 a.m. Sunday School 10:30 a.m. Worship
Church Council agreed to be a part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network. This organization will assist people in need of homes and jobs in the area. We chose not to be a host congregation as it would cause a conflict with our pre-school. The pre-school expressed an interest in renting our Youth Room. Council voted the proposal down until next year as we also have use for this room. Council filled out a Congregational Interim Need Assessment to help the Synod in a search for an interim pastor. All committee reports were given and approved. Jim Illencik
HOME COMMUNION MINISTRY Karen Battin-Vitale, Shirley Gardner and Roger Bartlett have taken on the ministry of visiting our members who are homebound or hospitalized. If you, or someone you know, are homebound, please call the church office. Under New Management! Over the next few months, you will see some changes to SEASONS. The new editor, Chère Riedel, will be implementing the changes. Please remember to have your articles in by the THIRD SUNDAY of the month! Put your articles in the newsletter box on Chère’s desk or give them to her!
Bishop Eaton will be at Emmanuel on September 3rd at 6:30 PM to lead a discussion on the Cooperative Ministry in Trumbull County. Come and learn what the Cooperative Ministry is all about. Dessert will be served. On Sunday, September 7th, Bishop Eaton will preside over our Rally Day service. A luncheon (organized by Diana Bauman) will be held following the service. Please sign up and plan on attending!
Pastor Bowen’s 40th Anniversary On Sunday, September 14th, we will join in the celebration of Pastor Richard Bowen’s 40th Anniversary of his ordination. Pastor Bowen will preside over the service. There will be a reception following the postlude to offer your congratulations! RUTH CIRCLE NEWS...The summer months were busy for members of Ruth Circle. Two funeral dinners were served, the Strawberry Festival was held with the Rebekah Circle, and our group held the rummage sale. We will be resuming our regular meetings beginning September 16, 2008 with Sarah Wilson and Phyllis Kreitler as hostesses. The school supplies will be packed for Lutheran World Relief. Any of you ladies of the church that would care to join us, you are most welcomed. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 AM except for the January and the summer months. Faithfully, June Hutchison
Music Notes Choir practice will begin on September 10th at 7:00 PM As always we will meet in the parlor. Have you seen the TV Commercial that says singing will improve the quality of life? It’s true! Ask any choir member. Come join us in choir this year and see if your quality of life improves! We will be singing on September 7th, please meet in the choir room at 9:45 AM.
Please let us know when you have any achievements or awards! We would gladly acknowledge and celebrate with each and every one of you!
CPR/AED Training...If you are interested in taking an Adult CPR/AED class, please see Jim Illencik or call the church office. This class is for first timers or people whose certification is lapsed. A minimum of 6 people is needed to form a class. Sign up as soon as possible!
Sunday School for Youth grades 9-12 will meet in the parlor for Rally Day. Adult Sunday School will also begin in Coad Chapel at 9:30.
REBEKAH CIRCLE We opened the season with a picnic/meeting at Georgia’s home. We are happy to have Amy Martin joining us. We welcome new members. A fun project of making lap robes for our shut-ins is planned for the September 15th meeting. Material is being provided. If you can cut and tie a knot, this project is for you. Contact a member for what to bring. Plans are being finalized for our October 20th meeting with the Sounds of Square County Singers. There will be a salad and dessert buffet preceding the event. All area Lutheran women are being invited. Remember the good food we had at the Underground Railroad Presentation? Well, if you didn’t attend that, you have another chance with this event. Don’t miss out, the performance will be great! Here is a good reason to go out to eat (not that we really need one!). First Book Trumbull County is a wonderful organization that raises money to put books in children’s hands. They have arranged with Max & Erma’s to have 20% of your lunch or dinner price, on September 11th, to go to First Book. You will need the coupon which will be available in the narthex. It’s a good way to help disadvantaged children. But to be a success, you need to eat there!! Next month’s hostesses will be Sue Kemp and Peggy Skoczylas. Please consider joining us. Georgia Mikola, Secretary
German Dinner The date set for the event is October 11th. (Watch for more Details)
